GIS 4048: Week One Orientation

Hello everyone! I'm now about halfway through the GIS certificate program. For this first week, our task was to create an ArcGIS StoryMap showing off places we'd lived. If we had already had Cartography with this professor, she gave us the option of updating our previous StoryMap, which I have done here:

I've seen a lot of you in other classes at this point. Hello to everyone who sees this!

Honestly, I joined this program kind of impulsively. I've always liked maps and spatial data, but have never really studied this formally. My employer had an opportunity to send several of us to a GIS conference, and I volunteered to go mostly out of curiosity. I was feeling bored and stuck with my career, and while I was there I had a eureka! moment, and signed up for this program on the next start date.

As we're drawing close to the end of the program, I'm excited to begin a GIS career. I've arranged for an internship with my employer, which hopefully will lead to some professional networking and opportunities. One thing I've been noticing is that there has been a trend of tech stories about computer science and CS adjacent jobs possibly being under threat from AI. It seems like, so far, GIS professionals are doing a lot to augment the scope of what they can do by using AI, but GIS jobs themselves have so far seemed resistant to total automation. Hopefully this trend holds for a while! I'd like to hopefully get in to dedicated GIS work, but I'm already finding ways to incorporate GIS knowledge into what I'm doing at my current job.

One thing I've definitely done throughout this program is to look at portfolios from previous years when I'm feeling stuck, don't understand something, or just need inspiration. If you ever come across this and something here has been helpful, please feel free to leave a comment! I'm going to keep this blog after graduation as a professional portfolio, I would love to know if I helped anybody get unstuck somewhere.
